Which Type of Siding is Best for my Home?

Is your home in need of new siding? There are several siding options to choose from, and each comes with its own set of benefits and drawbacks, so choosing the right one for your home can be a challenge. The type of siding you choose will depend greatly on your budget as well as your personal style preferences. Let’s look at some of the different types of siding and the pros and cons of each.

siding types

Vinyl Siding

Vinyl siding is a very popular option due to its affordability. This type of siding can be installed in panels or can be installed as shingles. Shingle style vinyl is significantly more expensive than panel siding, but still a more economical option than some other kinds of siding. Vinyl is easy to maintain and affordable, but it can be more easily damaged than other siding materials. Vinyl lasts anywhere from 15-30 years, so if you have a lower budget and don’t intend to stay in your home for more than 15 years or so, this could be a great option for you.

Wood Siding

Wood is beautiful but does require more maintenance than vinyl siding and comparable materials. When properly cared for, wood siding can last 50+ years, making it a good long-term siding solution for your home. Painting and/or staining every 3-5 years to seal the wood is ideal for protecting it against the elements. Wood siding is pricier than vinyl but lasts longer and looks more appealing in general. Homeowners who do not intend to sell their home and don’t mind the maintenance of painting and/or staining can benefit greatly from wood siding.

Brick and Stone Siding

Brick and stone are gorgeous options for siding on your home, but they are very expensive. Most brick and stone siding options are actually veneers, rather than full bricks or stones, but they still look sophisticated and last a lifetime. Brick and stone siding is equated with luxury and often comes with a price tag that reflects that. These siding options are good for high-end neighborhoods where homeowners will get a return on their investment when they sell, or homes that the owner doesn’t intend to sell and plans to stay for the rest of their life.

Metal Siding

Metal siding is popular because it is longer lasting than vinyl but less costly than wood. Metal siding also requires very little maintenance, and as an added bonus it helps maintain a cool temperature in the home, making it very energy efficient. Steel siding can last several decades, so it is a good option for long-term homeowners.
