Signs of Animal Damage to Roofing or Siding

As a homeowner, you’re likely already aware that at some point or another, wildlife are going to try and make their way into your home. In order to avoid allowing them entry via your roofing or siding, you must be on the look-out for evidence that nuisance animals and insects are present.

Some of the most common entry points wildlife will use to try and enter your home are:

  • Loose or missing vents in siding
  • Uncovered chimneys
  • Roof vents
  • Loose or missing roof tiles
  • Open spaces under decks and porches

Wild animals like racoons, squirrels, and birds will use their claws, teeth, and beaks to create holes in roof tiles and siding vents in order to gain access to the inside of your home. Performing regular examinations of your tiles and vents is the easiest way to detect the presence of nuisance wildlife.

Inspecting your roof isn’t the easiest task, so it’s best to start in the attic. Before you turn on the flashlight, inspect the area for any rays of sunlight shining in. This will alert you of holes that pests are using as an entry point into your home. You can then turn on overhead lights or use your flashlight to explore the space for signs of obvious pest presence, like animal droppings.

Besides visibly looking for damage, you can sometimes hear wildlife trying to make their way into your home. Small animals are known to scratch and claw their way in via little holes they make themselves. Old and weak roof tiles and worn siding make entry even easier as the animals don’t have to work as hard to damage them.

Once you’ve established the points of entry, you’ll be able to plan home repairs to fix the damage that has been done to your roof and siding. Working with a reliable home exterior contractor will ensure that the job is done efficiently and in a way that will help prevent future damage to your home from outdoor pests.
