Do I Need New Siding?

Your home’s siding is its first defense. While replacing it may not be at the top of your home improvement agenda, it’s incredibly important to the overall appearance, energy efficiency, and integrity of your home. While it is impossible to estimate how long siding will last, there are a few telltale signs that will let you know it’s time to replace your siding.

Cracked, Warped, or Rotting Siding

If you see that your home’s siding is cracked, warped, or rotting, it’s a sign that it’s certainly time to have it replaced. Inspect your home’s exterior and look for any of these things. Remember, even small cracks could be an indication of a bigger problem. In addition to doing a visual inspection, be sure to poke at the siding to see if it’s falling apart.

Bubbling or Blistering

Not only is siding that is bubbling or blistering a bad look, but it’s also an indication that your home’s siding is compromised. If you see spot blisters or bubbling forming underneath the surface of your siding, it’s time to have it replaced. That’s because bubbling and blistering siding are caused by water that has become trapped within the siding. This can lead to moisture getting inside the home and more expensive and complex repairs.

Fungus, Mold, or Mildew Growth

If you notice any fungus, mold, or mildew growth on your home’s siding, it’s probably time to have it replaced. These substances grow wherever moisture is available, and if it’s growing on your siding it could mean that there is water penetrating the siding. While not all instances of fungus warrant replacing your siding, it certainly does call for a professional inspection.

Paint Peeling Inside the Home

Sometimes poor siding on the outside of the home can reveal itself on the inside of the home. Paint peeling on the inside of your home can mean that moisture is getting through the siding and into your home. If moisture is getting through your siding and into your walls, it can lead to significant damage inside your home. Don’t wait until it’s too late; if you notice paint peeling inside your home, contact a siding contractor to have your siding replaced immediately.

High Energy Bills

Have you noticed a drastic increase in your energy bill? Your siding may be to blame. Most homeowners don’t associate high heating and cooling bills with their siding, but old, worn-out, or damaged siding can lead to expensive energy bills. That’s because your heating and cooling system needs to work harder to keep the home at a comfortable temperature. If this is the case for your home, consider installing new siding.
