Do You Have Mold in Your Roof?

If you’ve noticed something growing on your roof it can be hard to diagnose what it is. There are several things that can grow on your roof, some hazardous and some less damaging, but how do you know the difference? Having a professional come take a look at your roof is a good way to diagnose the problem, but there are some signs you can look for to help determine what is growing. Let’s look at the different things that can grow on your roof and how to remedy them, as well as mold and the damages it can do to your roof.

Mildew and Moss

Both mildew and moss can easily grow on roofs and over an extended period of time can cause damage, however, they differ from mold and algae because they do not impact the roof as quickly. Moss is easily recognizable and very common on many roofs in more damp environments. Moss itself isn’t damaging to the roof but it does lead to excess moisture sitting on the roof which can, over time, lead to damage.

Mildew, on the other hand, isn’t as damaging as mold but can lead to damage if left unattended. Mildew is often white or gray and looks almost powdery, making it very different in appearance from moss. Over time mildew can not only damage the roof but be a health hazard as it grows and spreads. Mildew is easier to remove than mold, however, making it less urgent of a removal.

Mold and Algae

While moss and mildew should be removed in a timely fashion to prevent damage, algae and mold need to be remedied much faster. Mold is very damaging to the roof and a health hazard to those exposed to it. Mold is easy to recognize as it is often black and slimy in appearance. Mold also often has a foul smell making it easy to detect. Algae can also grow on the roof and cause damage to the singles it grows on. Algae is not as much of a health concern as mold is, but it does deteriorate the shingles and should be removed as soon as possible. Algae is a deep green color but does not have the smell that mold does.

Fixing the Problem

If you’ve noticed anything growing on your roof recently you will want to contact a roofer as soon as possible. Whether you have mold, mildew, moss, or algae, working with a professional sooner rather than later can help your roof last longer and minimize damage. All of these things grow in places with excess dampness and shade, so you might also consider reducing the tree cover in your yard so excess moisture evaporates in the sun.
