You probably don’t think about the roof of your home too much, and that’s because it’s working properly. If your roof fails, it will be the only thing on your mind. In Maryland, we get some serious storms and need roofs capable of withstanding them. Do you know how old your roof is? Have you been having issues with your roof? As someone that has helped deal with many failed roofs, trust us when we say it is not something you want to experience. At Platinum Exteriors, we’re roofing experts and wanted to discuss today how you can be sure your roof is capable of withstanding the next heavy storm Mother Nature throws our way.
How Old is Your Roof?
The older your roof is, the higher the likelihood that you’ll run into a problem. Whenever you buy a home, it’s imperative that you know how old the roof is, as this should play a role in the price of the house. If the roof is thirty years old or older, then it’s at the point where it should be checked more frequently. Not sure how old your roof is? You could look through your closing documents if you still have them, or could have a professional roofing company inspect your roof to give you an estimate of its age. Either way, it’s a good idea, as a homeowner, to know how old your roof is.
What Kind of Roofing Material Composes Your Roof?
What is your roof made out of? The most common roofing materials are shingles, concrete tiles, and metal roofs. Shingles are usually the weakest of the three – with metal roofs being the strongest, and concrete tiles are somewhere in the middle. If the storm is harsh enough, it will be capable of ripping off any roof, but if you’re seriously worried, we recommend having a metal roof installed.
Has Your Roof Been Reinforced for Storms?
There are several things a roofing contractor can do to add additional storm protection to a roof. Designing your roof with strong structural walls and adequate roof trusses and decks is a must if you want your roof to hold up to a strong storm. Not sure if your roof has these protections? Have it inspected by an experienced Maryland roofing company, and they’ll be able to advise you on how prepared your roof is for our next storm. That is something Platinum Exteriors can help you with.
