3 Questions to Ask Your Maryland Exterior Remodeling Contractor

Your home is one of the biggest investments you’ll probably make in your lifetime. It makes sense to be choosy about who you trust to perform home improvement work, because the quality of their work can either add to or detract from the overall value of your property. Here are three questions you should ask your Maryland exterior remodeling contractor to determine whether they may be a good match for your needs.

Are You Licensed and Insured?

When looking for a Carroll County roofing or siding contractor, first of all ask about their licensing and insurance. In Maryland, these contractors need to be licensed by the Maryland Home Improvement Commission (MHIC). A license means that a particular contractor took the time to pass an examination and prove their expertise to the state.

Workers’ compensation insurance, on the other hand, means that if a contractor gets injured on your property, you are not responsible for paying their medical bills. You may also ask if your contractor’s policy covers bodily injury and property damage—a few things you want your contractor to pay for if they cause this type of damage.

Can I see Your Portfolio?

Just because your roofing contractor is licensed and insured, doesn’t mean they will deliver the quality of work you expect. And with any type of exterior renovations, quality matters because any imperfections may negatively affect your home’s curb appeal and value. Ask your contractor for photos of completed projects or before/after shots. If none are available, consider it a warning sign because a contractor who takes pride in his workmanship will likely take a photo of the finished project.

Feel free to also ask for references if you want to investigate even further. An established and experienced contractor should easily have 2-3 customers who would rave about their services.

Do You Offer a Warranty?

Most roofing and siding products, as wells as doors and windows, come with their own manufacturer warranties. But it’s even better when a contractor offers a warranty on their labor, especially when it comes to replacement projects. Considering that roofing or siding replacement can be rather expensive, you want all the peace of mind you can get.

After getting answers to these three questions, you should have a good understanding on whether this particular exterior remodeling contractor may be a good fit. Want someone to practice on? Give Platinum Exteriors a call and we’ll be happy to answer these and other questions.
