When is Siding Replacement Necessary?

Not every homeowner has to deal with siding replacement during their home ownership. But if you’ve been living in the same residence for 10 years or longer, there is a good chance siding replacement will be on your to-do list at some point.

Problems with siding are usually easy to spot. Be on a lookout for:

  • Warped, cracked or missing boards or shingles
  • Boards that look loose or can be dislodged with a slight pull
  • Water damage on your walls
  • Drafts and increased HVAC costs

If you are selling your home, definitely consider replacing the siding, especially if it’s been patched more than once with poorly matched materials. Siding is a huge factor in your home’s curb appeal, which is how your buyers form their first impressions.

Types of Siding We Install

Replacing your siding is a great investment. When it’s done right, it improves energy efficiency, curb appeal and increases the value of your home. At Platinum Exteriors, we can professionally install a variety of siding materials including vinyl, fiber cement, cedar shake, and others.

Vertical and Horizontal Siding

If you chose panel-style siding, it can be installed either vertically or horizontally. Actually, you can have both types of installation within the same application. For example, siding is often installed vertically on the gable to contrast with the rest of the structure. Horizontal siding is more conventional, and vertical siding is more unique. It’s also a bit more labor-intensive to install and may cost more.

Lap and Clapboard Siding

Lap siding consists of long panels or boards that are designed to overlap with each other. In order to achieve this, one side of the board is shaped like a wedge to be able to fit under the board above it. This creates a high-contrast surface that is also highly energy-efficient due to the layering of boards. Lap siding is also known as clapboard siding, bevel and weatherboard in different parts of the country, but all of them mean essentially the same overlapping approach.

Board and Batten Siding

Board and batten is an old building method with a timeless look. It’s achieved by nailing battens (long, thin strips of wood) over the spacing between the vertically installed boards. This style was adopted by many vinyl and fiber cement siding manufacturers, so you no longer have to use wood to get the same look.

Beaded Siding

Beaded siding is just one of the many decorative styles of siding. It’s largely influenced by the Colonial South and is widely popular in the Carolinas and Virginia. This style of siding features an indented line across the bottom of each board. When installed horizontally, this design creates sharp, high-contrast shadow lines between the boards for crisp appearance.

These are just some of the siding types we install as requested by our Maryland siding replacement clients. And at the end, we finish it off with high-quality trim and gutters to give your home a finished look.
